Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story tan stucco house with a red tile roof stands behind a broad gravel lot dusted with snow, flanked by frost-covered desert shrubs under a pale sky with falling snowflakes.

Sizing a boiler for this house means accounting for what the burner and heat exchanger will actually be asked to do inside a compressed heating season. Homes in Maricopa County, AZ run heat about five months a year, from November through March. Cycling concentrates on those components hard and repeatedly across that window, and a unit that is undersized runs longer each call, adding strain to the ignition system with every cycle. A contractor quoting an installation here has to calculate that load precisely, because a loose estimate produces a boiler that is working at its limit from its first season.

Ductwork sized and routed for a forced-air system does not automatically carry a boiler's heat distribution, and in Maricopa County a large share of houses were built exactly that way. Half the homes in Maricopa County, Arizona were built in 1993 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a boiler install here looks at the existing duct layout before pricing the unit, because what is in the walls and ceiling tells them whether that infrastructure can be adapted or has to be re-routed. That evaluation changes the scope of the job. The boiler itself is straightforward to spec once the distribution side is settled.

What a Boiler Installation Covers

The boiler itself sits in a mechanical room, basement, or utility closet and is the system's heat source. A contractor also installs the expansion tank, which mounts close to the boiler and absorbs pressure changes in the water as it heats and cools. Together these two pieces form the core of what gets put in.

Radiators or baseboard units run along interior walls in the living spaces and are where heat actually enters the rooms. The circulator pump, mounted on the piping near the boiler, moves hot water through that loop. A contractor fits the thermostat as well, wiring it to control when the boiler fires.

The drawing shows a general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to this house.
